Reflecting on 2020

Happy New Year! 2020 was a challenging year for everyone. I wanted to take a moment to write down some of the highs and lows from the year along with my intentions and goals for 2021.

I even created a template for you to use so you can do the same. I hope this helps you plan for a positive and productive start to the New Year!

One Unexpected Joy From 2020

We spent so much time outside. I felt so grateful for our usual Florida sunshine and the opportunity to get out on the water every single week. We skied on the lake, snorkeled in the ocean, and did a lot of spur-of-the-moment picnics on the water. We saw an incredible amount of wildlife with every boat ride. Roux swam a ton and loves being on the water just as much as Loren and I do. It’s a really special family activity for us.

What I Learned About Myself in 2020

I still love early mornings and need a lot of help to be patient and gracious.

There is something so special – and even sacred about my quiet early mornings. Yes, it’s alone time, which is nice – but it really gives me the time to read, reflect, spend time in the Word, pray, and get my thoughts and to-do list organized for the day. My morning routine is my only super power – and I love that I practiced this routine so much this year.

I’m human too and have learned that this year really tested my own patience. I found myself needing to be very intentional about being slow to speak and even being quicker with giving others the benefit of the doubt. This year was absolutely crazy – but I’m so glad I learned this about myself in a new way because I’m challenged to be different from it, and I like that.

One Goal I Achieved in 2020

I’m proud of the financial goals we’ve accomplished this year. We met our savings goal for the year. I stuck to what was important to me and paid for all home renovations without going into debt!

One Thing I Struggled With In 2020

It might be weird to admit – but I struggled with my nutrition more than in other years! Especially in the summer. I was reflecting on this and I think it comes down to a limiting mindset I have around food. When the “fun” restaurants shut down – my balance was disrupted. Normally, I eat 80-90% clean at home and then enjoy [fully enjoy] the weekly family night or date night where we enjoy something yummy.

We did support as many small businesses as we could – which meant more take out. We got tired of cooking so much. We couldn’t find chicken in our stores for about a month. All these valid excuses – contributed to a summer of eating whatever + whenever.

When we stopped going out to dinner – we started to bring more and more of the “yummy” food in the house. I’m not big on restrictions. But, I do know myself and know that I do really well with simple balance at home + treating as a special occasion.

I reigned it back in for the last part of the year – but I’m not immune to it. I have to stay aware of my choices & really ask myself if “this” is what I truly want to eat. You know, don’t eat a stale donut just because it’s there – make it worth it!

To state the obvious: I also struggled with having to cancel so many wonderful travel events throughout the year.

My Highlight of 2020

Watching Roux thrive at school: his relationship with his teachers, his friends who he adores, and his excitement for learning + school activities has been so much fun to watch. He is so proud of everything they do together & has grown so much in just these last 5 months!

I’m so happy that we are making progress with our IVF plans! All of this started in April, when things were definitely complicated with COVID. The process has been incredibly slow due to offices being closed, limited staff, and only virtual visits. We’ve finally turned a corner though, and have our next steps mapped out.

My top work-related highlight would have to be receiving the Leadership Award from my network. We all met virtually instead of packing out a huge football stadium – but part of that was sweet too, because I got to just be with my family – in my home. To be the recipient of this year’s award means so much to me & I take the role I have very seriously. I’m honored to advocate for the network of coaches who are helping hundreds of thousands of people live healthier lives – and for me – I think of all those families who are improving because of the work their mom or dad is doing to build a business out of helping people.

To sum it up for me: the HIGHLIGHT of the year was just so much togetherness for our family. We work from home. So our ACTUAL lives didn’t change drastically this year. But something shifted. We were all forced to slow down & look to our immediate family even more – and that was a blessing for us.

The Biggest Lesson I Learned In 2020

I was reminded how RESILIENT we are as humans. We may be up against an absolutely impossible challenge – but we will come through. We likely have a lot of different opinions & that can sometimes mean heated conversations + disagreements. But, at the end of the day – we are ALL doing the best with what we have and what we know. We are making choices based on our own life experiences + values. We can disagree and STILL LOVE. We can disagree and STILL SHOW KINDNESS.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2021

My Intention For 2021

I’ve never been one to choose a word or make specific resolutions. But I usually find myself pulled towards certain intentions. Loren and I sit down every NYE and write out family goals for the upcoming year. This is my favorite!

My intention for 2021 is all about: kindness & consistency. I want to be able to sustain the habits I care so much about – so that takes time and grace to continue to practice and grow in those areas. I want to show Roux what it looks like every day to be kind. In my own home, to strangers, and even if someone doesn’t “deserve” it.

Milestones or Events I’m Looking Forward To

I’m first looking forward to bringing in the New Year with my family & some very special friends in the mountains. We are so grateful to be traveling safely & cannot wait to see Roux in a brand new environment, on skis!

We had to cancel a huge family reunion trip to Ireland with my side of the family in 2020 – and while I’m not sure if 2021 will be the year for that – I’m looking forward to creating a plan B for that trip.

I’m looking forward to renovating our last 2 bathrooms this year & continuing with this Lake House project – debt free.

I’m hopeful and prayerful for God to grow our family this year & pray that I will be diligent in sharing the journey so others are encouraged.
