A Letter To My 5 Year Old

Dear Roux!

You turned 5 this week! Roux is 5! ✹

Roux, you are without question, our greatest gift! God made you with the biggest heart! I can’t quite figure out how He fit such a BIG amount of kindness into such a little body.

These last 5 years + 40 weeks + 1 day have been full of a daily gratitude – the kind of gratitude I never experienced until I experienced the miracle that was you.

The love that we have for you is unexplainable. Daddy and I are forever dedicated to you, your life & your pursuit of the life God has in store for you.

You are so sweet, brave, joyful, silly, smart, gentle, happy, thoughtful, and like I already said, kind to your core. You love all sports, popcorn, superhero’s, all bad guys, tacos, video games, special treats, family time, movies, hiding, nerf wars, swimming, obstacle courses, and your most recent love of learning to read!

Some of my favorite memories with you over this last year:

  • We started the year watching you learn to ski for the first time! You loved it & we were so proud of you! Seeing snow and skiing/boarding as a family was a great experience despite Daddy leaving the mountain in an ambulance. 😬
  • We watched you thrive in VPK! Both socially & academically – you’re a little sponge & love your friends and teachers.
  • You started playing Tball with Daddy as your coach & really developed as an athlete this year!
  • We enjoyed lots of family adventures on the boat, in the pool, to the monster truck arena, and to the zoo.
  • We continued private swim lessons, mostly because you just have so much fun in the pool!
  • You went to your first hockey game to see the Lightning play, got a game puck & ate your weight in snacks!
  • We traveled to Michigan with friends and enjoyed a ton of time unplugged as a family in nature. You loved our bike rides & buggy rides.
  • We snuck away to Disney & had fun on water slides.
  • You threw your first Boo Bash with all your friends from school & had the best time!
  • You insisted the family dress up as ninjas this year – so we made it happen.
  • We went to see a lot of movies, whenever we could!
  • We headed to the Dominican Republic for a family beach trip, you loved playing in the sand, jumping in the pool, ordering smoothies, and seeing all the Paw Patrol characters there.
  • You say you want to be an astronaut when you grow up.
  • Your closest friends are Conor, Avy & Luka.
  • You developed a strong love for hot chocolate this year and loved getting a hot chocolate or making one “just for fun” even if it was 80 degrees outside.
  • You continue to be reserved until you’re around your people – then you are the silliest!
  • We spent a lot of quality time together, and listening to you talk is one of our favorite things!
  • You pray for a sibling and ask often about that.
  • You and I did a lot of baking in November and December – it’s one of your favorite things to do with me.
  • We still read books together every single night & it’s one of the best parts of my day.
  • You ask a lot about our faith, you’re curious about the Gospel and we are talking about it daily.
  • You ask great questions – I’m often having to stop and think about how to answer them properly.

You’ve become quite assertive which is a new thing! This is the first year that discipline has been a big part of our journey together. You are wonderful through & through and you’re starting to assert more independence and opinion, which we think is a great thing to see. One of the only things that really make you upset is feeling misunderstood. You’re sensitive in nature, just like me. And if you make a mistake or make a wrong choice – you likely have instant tears, which is usually “punishment” enough.

You’re a great helper.

You love having “family days”!

You’re excited about kindergarten & your main priority is to play hockey as soon as possible.

This year we are doing a simple superhero party at a ranch down the street from our house. We are surprising you with a visit from Spiderman & Captain America.

Our bond is the most precious blessing and celebrating you is the easiest thing we’ve ever done. Happy Birthday my 5-year-old earth-side angel. ✹
